WestCoast secure points finishes in Georgia as TCR International campaign gets underway

WestCoast Racing began a new era as season three of TCR International Series got underway this weekend (31 March – 2 April, 2017) at Rustavi International Motorpark, Georgia. With an all-new look, Gianni Morbidelli was joined by 16-year-old Giancomo Altoè in the new TEGERA Infinity branded Volkswagen Golf GTi TCR cars.

For the team, it proved to be a weekend of acclimatisation and development of the new package, whilst aiming to make the best of every opportunity. The final result was a double points finish in race one, and a further points for Morbidelli in race two.

“It’s a reasonable result for us as we knew we’d be somewhat on the back foot in these early races of the season,” said Team Manager James Nixon. “We didn’t have the raw pace in the car in race conditions, that is clear, but Gianni held on for points in both races while Giancomo enjoyed the chance to start from pole position and lead a race on his debut, so that’s a huge positive.

“We know we have work to do, but it’s a new package and we’re confident that we can make progress sooner rather than later.”

Qualifying saw Morbidelli and Altoè record the eighth and tenth fastest times respectively, giving the latter the pole position for race two reverse grid. Throwing another variable into the equation, wet conditions greeted the field for the first race.

The start saw Altoè make a good jump from tenth position on the grid run in eighth, while Morbidelli dropped from seventh on the grid to tenth. It proved to be a fairly static race – despite the best efforts of Altoè to pass Pepe Oriola – with both drivers holding position through to the chequered flag and gaining five points.

With the top ten qualifying results revered for race two, Altoè lined up on pole position with Morbidelli in fourth with a dry line starting to form. Altoè made a good start to retain the lead into the first turn, but a bold move from Pepe Oriola half way around the first lap saw Altoè drop to third position behind Oriola and teammate Hugo Valente.

A safety car period followed before race resumed with Altoè in third and Morbidelli in sixth. Altoè however found himself under pressure from the fourth-placed Attila Tassi and then then ran wide into the gravel trap after losing the front – and then rear end – of the Golf GTi as the race resumed on lap five. Sadly for the youngster, his battle points were effectively over as he resumed in 14th position, and finished in 11th.

Morbidelli meanwhile continued in sixth position, but it soon became clear that the Italian was struggling for grip, dropping down to ninth position at the conclusion of the race.

With points on the board, the team now begin preparations for the next round of the TCR International Series, which takes place at Bahrain International Circuit, Sakhir, 13-16 April, 2017.

WestCoast Racing all set for Georgia with extended partnership with primary sponsor Ejendals

WestCoast Racing has big plans for the coming season in the TCR International Series, which gets underway this coming weekend (1-2 April, 2017) at Rustavi International Motopark, Georgia. The team has already announced a switch to Volkswagen Golf TCR machinery with Gianni Morbidelli and Giancomo Altoè behind the wheel, now we are pleased to announce that its primary sponsor this year will be Ejendals.

The team’s extended partnership with Ejendals will see the global introduction of the TEGERA Infinity brand; a new generation of safety gloves that let you conquer with comfort, into the TCR Series after a previously promoting the JALAS® brand.

The Swedish company has specialised in developing, manufacturing and marketing high-quality hand and foot protection, delivering the highest standard of protection, durability and ergonomics. As primary sponsor, Ejendals will look to market its product to a wider audience and use the team as a platform for delivering its European marketing campaign.

Team Principal Dick Jönsson Wigroth welcomes back Ejendals who step up as primary sponsor after running the JALAS branding in previous two campaigns.

“Of course, it’s great to continue with Ejendals and even better to be stepping up with TEGERA Infinity,” Wigroth said. “We’ve got a big year ahead for the team and with Ejendals, so we’re putting in a huge effort on sporting and on the commercial side to ensure that we’re successful on track and also can deliver for Ejendals and all of our other sponsors going forward.”

After finishing third in last year’s campaign, WestCoast Racing have high ambitions and expectations ahead of the season but admit that it will be a bit of a learning curve as they adapt to new equipment.

“We are racing our new car for the first time against teams that have been running their cars for a year or two already,” Team Manager James Nixon said. “I know Gianni is as hungry for wins as ever but we have accepted that it will be difficult for us in this early part of the season. We need to learn all about and understand our new car and be patient. Over the season, we need consistency, we have won more races than anyone in TCR International, but now we need a title.

“Giacomo drove with us on a shakedown and I must say how impressed I was by him, he has a very wise head on very young shoulders and I look forward to see his development throughout the year.”

The Swedish racing war is over – STCC and TTA merges

STCC and TTA has decided to merge and the championship will use the TTA regulations for the 2013 season. The decision is a result of many and long negotiations between the two organisations.

”We have had a productive dialogue with TTA which has resulted in this solution. We have found a common ground to stand on and we are going to continue to develop the concept to create the best possible conditions for Swedish racing,” said Rickard Pålsson, owner of STCC.

”Swedish racing needs stability and sustainability, that is what we get now. Everyone involved are very happy with the solution. We have got the conditions to create an even stronger platform for Swedish racing and the future looks a lot brighter thanks to that,” said Greger Petersson, Managing Director for TTA.

A strong connection to the car industry is important for the development of the championship. That is why the regulations will go through several planned changes. STCC Managing Director Bob Huzell explains:
”STCC is an important platform for the car industry in regards to marketing. To strengthen the relationship, we have decided to launch a three-year-plan on how to develop the concept. The cars are going to be changed on a number of points. Turbo charged 1.6 liter engines from the different manufacturers will be introduced over time, among other things,” said Huzell.

The solution taken by STCC and TTA was made possible partly thanks to that STCC partner Yokohama stepped aside.

”We owe Yokohama a big thanks and we are going to continue our strong cooperation on different levels during the coming season. We are now going to work hard on the final setup for the coming season in terms of calendar and support classes. We are looking forward to an exciting 2013,” said Huzell.

Tough finish to challenging season for WestCoast Racing

A challenging season finished for WestCoast Racing with a sixth place as the best result in final race of the TTA season held in Gothenburg. Martin Öhlin finished the race in sixth place. Returning to WestCoast Racing for a one off race Duncan Huisman finished eight while both Richard Göransson and Fredrik Larsson retired from the race.
”In some ways this season ended in typical fashion for us,” team manager Dick Jönsson Wigroth said. ”This just hasn’t been our year, we’ve had the speed but a combination of technical problems, bad luck and mistakes has punished us. We’ve had great drivers and a great team but it just wasn’t meant to be for us this year. Now it’s actually good it’s over so we can put this behind us and start pushing for next year instead. A big congratulation to Fredrik Ekblom for a well deserved championship win after a great season by him.”

Martin Öhlins sixth place put an end to a roller coaster eyar. He spent the first race stuck in traffic but had good speed towards the end of the race. He finished seventh overall in the championship.
”My race was pretty ok and quite fun but nothing special”, he said. ”I could save my tyres in the beginning when I was stuck and had good speed in the end. With a few more laps I probably would have passed Dahlgren for fifth place but it didn’t mean anything for the overall standings anyway. It’s been a mixed season and this was it. At least we finished with the car in one piece.”

Duncan Huisman returned to WestCoast Racing for a one off in TTA and could leave with a points finish. Huisman finished eight after a great start to the race. Brake problems towards the end of the race forced him to lift off. He was happy to return to Sweden and racing in Sweden again.
”A big thanks to Dick, Greger Pettersson and Solution F who worked to make this possible for me. It’s not a secret I enjoy racing here and it was an enjoyable race. I made a really good start but I took it very easy in the first corners as I’m not fighting for anything. After a while my brakes were gone and I had to pump the brakes between the corners to get brake pressure. The whole weekend we have struggled with some small problems with the balance of the car we never quite managed to solve. But I’m pretty pleased with my effort, I came here with no preparations at all facing very tough competition but I could still fight. It was an enjoyable experience.”

Fredrik Larsson fought for a podium position in the race but was forced to retire with a broken rear suspension when he was fourth.
”The right rear suspension broke, maybe after I hit a curb hard earlier in the race. The car felt fine after that but it might have gotten worse during the race. A typical end to this season which really has been up and down for us. We’ve had the speed but have not gotten the results for it and we just have to come back next year instead,” Larsson said.

Richard Göransson was also forced to finish a tough season with a retirement. He retired after he hit the barriers hard.
”When I passed Tommy Rustad something probably broke in the radiator so it leaked and put fluid on the tyres. I got a big slide I was unable to correct and that was that. It’s typical for this season, I will just forget about this and move on,” he summarized.

Fredrik Ekblom won the championship and became the first TTA champion. WestCoast Racing congratulates him to the championship title.

Fredrik Larsson finished fourth overall in the standings with Richard Göransson sixth and Martin Öhlin seventh overall.

Fredrik Larsson dominates at Anderstorp

No once could challenge Fredrik Larsson on raceday at Anderstorp. The BMW Dealer Team-driver led from start to finish after having started in pole position and he had the race in his hands.
”It was perfect. The race turned out to be a dream scenario for me. The start was good and I could keep the lead going down to turn two which was key. I knew that I could control and get a gap after that and it worked perfect. I was a bit worried about the tyres towards the end but not even that was a problem. I felt safe after qualifying and knew we had a great car today. A great job by everyone at WestCoast Racing,” Fredrik said.

Martin Öhlin held fourth position, where he qualified, for a long time during the race but had to surrender and finish fifth in the final laps. A result he had mixed feelings about.
”I’m happy with the points today and the fact I finished ahead of the drivers I’m fighting in the championship. But I did not drive well today, the tyres were gone very early and I just drove worse and worse after that. The goal was a podium today and I didn’t reach that but nevertheless we scored some good points,” he said.

Richard Göransson’s day at Anderstorp went from bad to worse. Gearbox problems in qualifying meant he was unable to qualify and had to start last. In the race he flew through the field and was up at seventh place after just a few laps and had a pace that looked good for a sensational podium. But then bad luck struck again and his engine lost power and he fell down to a ninth place. Another point for the fastest lap of the race was of little comfort.
”It really doesn’t go our way this year. This was a strange race, from the beginning I felt something was strange with the engine and it gradually got worse and worse. Towards the end I couldn’t even get up to sixth gear on the straight. The car was awesome and despite engine problems I could overtake several cars and a podium finish was possible today. It’s very frustrating when you get hit by things that are out of your control. A point for the fastest lap isn’t of much comfort but I just have to greak down and them come back again for the next race,” Richard said.
